Current Tutors FAQ

TutorsWhat do I do if I’m going to be late or can’t come to my scheduled class session?
We understand life gets busy! It’s okay if you have to occasionally miss class. If you won’t be able to tutor, please contact the Education staff at least one hour before your scheduled session at 319-731-0444. Also call if you are running late so that we don’t find another tutor for your student!

Cedar Rapids is having bad weather. Do we still have class?
CMC follows Cedar Rapids Schools in cancelling or delaying classes due to inclement weather. If Cedar Rapids Schools cancels class, then we cancel our classes. If they delay classes, then any CMC classes scheduled during the delay are canceled. Please check the KCRG website for any updates. Evening and weekend cancellations will be posted on the home page of the CMC website.

How do I stay informed about important updates?
Two white announcement boards located near the entrance to the Education office include important closure dates, holidays, in-service days, and CMC events. Also keep an eye out for our bi-monthly Education e-newsletter!

I want to start tutoring an additional student. Who do I talk to?
That’s great! Our wait list is constantly growing, and we can always use additional volunteer support! Please talk to a staff member from the Education Program about your availability, and they will place you with an additional student as soon as possible.

I’m really struggling with an aspect of tutoring. What can I do?
The Education Staff is always available to answer any question you may have, big or small! We always want to be sure our tutors and students are comfortable, so please do not hesitate to ask for help. You can drop by the office to chat, or send us an email at education@cmc-cr.org.

My student shared that they need help with problems they are experiencing outside of class. I want to make sure my student is okay and has the resources they need. What should I do?
Thank you so much for listening to your student and caring about them. However, it’s important to recognize when your student has needs that fall outside of your tutoring commitment. The Education Staff know lots of additional resources in the community and are happy to help! We can assist students with everything from food stamps and health insurance to legal resources and childcare. Tell your student to come talk with us and we will connect them to the resources they need.

Create a welcoming community as a volunteer tutor!
By sharing one hour per week, you can help an adult learner learn English, prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam, or improve basic math and reading skills.

To become a tutor at CMC, register for a New Tutor Orientation, or contact Katie Splean, Volunteer Manager at volunteer@cmc-cr.org or 319-731-0446.
