February Tutor Conference

CMC is hosting its first-ever tutor conference! Adult Basic Education staff will be hosting sessions on a variety of topics on February 8th and 9th. We would like to provide opportunities for everyone to best serve the students they work with. This conference is meant for all tutors to learn how to teach more effectively. Side by Side Refresher
Presenter: Anne Dugger
Saturday, February 9th 1:30pm – 3:30pm
If you work in Side by Side a lot, this training is for you! We will look at how to use the books, the teacher’s guides, and how to use the Side by Side curriculum on the computer.

Pronunciation Pro Tips
Presenter: Katie Rosenberger and Stephen McTier

This is for any tutor who has wondered about how to teach pronunciation and what our official stance on it is! This is a new training that will provide you with some skills to tackle those pesky r’s, l’s, and th’s.

Emerging Literacy and How to Teach it

Teaching students who are not literate in any language has its own rewards. Here, we examine a strengths based approach to teaching these beginning and emerging readers. You can expect to look at the Laubach and What’s Next series of books.

Cultural Humility

We will explore the differences between being culturally competent and culturally humble. Expect to be a little uncomfortable as we look at social hierarchies, power dynamics, and biases. This training is great for everyone and will help you think through all the differing cultures we host at CMC.

Conversation Class

Having a conversation seems like a simple task, but when you add differing levels of English knowledge, cultural and religious roadblocks, (and personalities!) sometimes it can be a process. We will explore some conversation curriculum and some tips and tricks for talking with students in a formalized class.

Teaching Citizenship

This training will provide you with the necessary tools to teach citizenship effectively. We will explore the requirements for citizenship application, the interview process, and ways to promote civic engagement for our newest citizens!

Curriculum Circus!

This training will take a brief look at every book in our curriculum and give some ideas for how to teach each one. This is a quick overview for those tutors who find themselves subbing in for students using different books.

Language Lab, Computer and Independent Study

Take a look at the computer lab in a new way and learn about Side by Side as a supplement on the computer! We will be looking at different websites and apps that students can use to supplement their learning. We will be giving a brief overview of the Language Lab.
