On Friday, June 16, 2023, community members, business leaders, and advocates gathered together at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center for CMC’s inaugural Immigration & Business Luncheon, a day dedicated to fostering collaboration, celebrating achievements, and advancing understanding of the vital contributions of refugees and immigrants in our business community and workforce.
Morning Educational Session
To kick off the event, the day began with an Educational Session that delved into the experiences of those navigating the complex immigration system.
Participants engaged in insightful discussions about the journeys of individuals with various immigration statuses, those seeking asylum, humanitarian parole, and refugee status, as well as the various pathways to citizenship available to them. These conversations offered a window into the challenges and opportunities faced by those building new lives in the United States.
A highlight of the morning was an immersive Farsi Simulation, which invited attendees to experience what it’s like to arrive in a country where the language and culture are unfamiliar. The exercise illuminated some of the daily hurdles community members face as they learn English and adjust to life in the U.S., fostering empathy and understanding for the strength and determination of our immigrant and refugee neighbors.
The session not only informed but inspired, equipping participants with knowledge and insights to drive more inclusive practices in their workplaces and communities.
Luncheon & Awards Ceremony
The Luncheon & Awards Ceremony was the centerpiece of the day, bringing the Corridor together for a celebratory meal and a program honoring those who make a difference in the local workforce and business sectors.
Nick AbouAssaly, Mayor of Marion, led the afternoon as our emcee, guiding the event with his trademark leadership and energy. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, and immigrating to the U.S. in 1975, Nick has dedicated his career to public service and community development. As the mayor of Marion, one of Iowa’s fastest-growing cities, he works tirelessly to drive progress. A 30-year attorney and partner at Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman, Nick has been recognized as Best Lawyers – Lawyer of the Year and is a CBJ Forty Under 40 honoree. His work extends beyond his legal career, serving on numerous boards and commissions in Eastern Iowa.
Dr. Ahmed Agyeman delivered the keynote address, sharing inspiring words about his personal journey and the impact of immigrants to the community. Originally from Ghana, Dr. Agyeman has spent his career empowering underserved communities through education and employment opportunities. As the Director of the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families at DMACC, he oversees vital services in education, job training, and financial coaching for Central Iowans. His previous work in admissions, financial aid, and refugee case management has helped families from Southeast Asia and North Central Africa, and his leadership continues to advocate for equity and opportunity through his service on several boards, including the Iowa International Center and the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa.
