My name is Amanda and I’m 40 years old. I could tell you a story about my journey of domestic violence, addiction, prison, loss of family, and feeling like I wasn’t worth anything in this world. But instead, I want to tell you what HOPE means to me. Hope is a sandwich.
I was feeling really low the day that I arrived at Catherine McAuley Center. I had just lost my apartment and since I am disabled, I did not have the ability to take all of my belongings. As I moved my few remaining items into the house at Catherine McAuley Center, I had to sit to catch my breath. I remember just looking down at my hands and out of the corner of my eye I saw a sandwich being placed in front of me and a woman said, “Welcome home.”
HOME. That’s what Catherine McAuley Center is to me. My home now is a place of safety and support. As I’ve healed and become stronger, I am now the woman offering a sandwich to a new roommate who is beginning their journey.
